Iguana on Aruba

This story and photographs is from our afternoon in Aruba after we had flown in from Santo Domingo. It is, as the title suggests, the story of Iguana (plural, Iguani? Sounds too much like guano!)

The first three pictures are of wild Iguana on the rocks at the shores of Aruba harbor. We found this first one by noting the fascination of two boys about six and eight who were looking like they would like to catch this one, but were a little skeptical as to whether or not they bite (they do!).

The next series of photos (clockwise from photo at right) are of Uncle Bob catching one by the tail, the Iguana rolling and arching to try to break his tail (we saw one that had lost a foot of so of his tail by such a maneuver). Bob was careful to not pull too hard or to allow the Iguana to twist his tail; instead Bob used the moment to grab the tail further towards the body where it is stronger.
Subsequent photos show Bob slowly reaching for the Iguana´s body with his left hand, tickling it in the ribs and eventually touching it very near his head.

  1. How about seeing some monkeys!! I realize that for little boys, lizards are the irresistable attraction; but, for some of us, the monkeys take the cake! They both bite, though, so be careful!!

  2. I visited the wild monkeys last year -- the same ones that Amy visited. We brought along a bunch of bananas and boy were we welcomed. Not by the big troop sargeant, though!! He was jealous and suspicious and told everybody to not be suckered in by those pale, hairless apes!

No, I don´t expect to see the monkeys this time. Sorry!
