A Lunar Eclipse and Two Great GrandMermaids

Last Wednesday evening, the Grand Mother and Grumpy were favored by a visit from the two Great GrandMermaids. Oh, and Grumpy should mention that their Father and Grandfather also visited.

The original purpose of this preannounced visit was to view the total eclipse of the Moon from our northeast-facing deck. The deck provided a relatively unobstructed view of the eastern horizon and a minimal interference from urban light pollution. Unfortunately, a mid-altitude cloud cover totally obliterated our view of the night sky until about a quarter to seven (totality was to occur at about 7:00 pm). The opportunity to view this semi-rare event was especially pleasant because of being able to share it with two grandsons and two Great GrandMermaids. For excellent photos of what we saw, please go to Blief's and Renton Kayaker BLOGS (see links in column on right). A photo from a different point of view (namely the Straw House in Amboy) can be seen by going to the BLOG, Letters from Amboy (also available on the right).

Meantime, inside the warmth of the Grand Mother's house, the resident Grandson Paco shared his Leopard gecko's ("Tange" and "Bumpy") with his two second cousins, the Great GrandMermaids, Abigail and Amelia. Careful handling of these shy creatures was allowed by Paco; the littlest Great GrandMermaid Amelia, however, declined to hold the sometimes squiggly little lizards. Mostly, they just watched the gecko's as they skittered about in the strange, red tub that restrained them from becoming an elusive part of the living room fauna -- along with an occasional cricket that escapes the otherwise careful handling by Paco in trying to feed the crickets to his gecko's.

It was an especially enjoyable evening for the Grand Mother and Grumpy. We think Paco enjoyed showing off his gecko's to the Great GrandMermaids also. And we all enjoyed a dish of pudding mixed up by the Great GrandMermaids under the watchful eye of their Great Grandmother.

Lemon Meringue Pie Revisited (Again!)

Grumpy never tires of admiring (and subsequently eating) the delightful, delectable, delicious Lemon Meringue Pies lovingly (with forgetfulness for all of Grumpy's misdeeds) and painstakingly (using, Grumpy is told, "51 separate pieces of kitchen ware!") crafted by the Grand Mother (aka: the First Wife). Hence the pie (lone survivor of a set of two) proudly pictured at right.

Now, having these pies was such a pleasant surprise to Grumpy that he thought to share his happiness with one Bopop (otherwise known as #2 son). Unfortunately, this son decided to play a game of child-parental politics and responded by sending his Mother (aka: the Grand Mother) an e-mail in which he said, "I don't understand why you baked a lemon pie and still have a dirty house. I thought you would have to have some maid services done for you before there would be time for pies.". As if this uprising-inciting comment was not enough, the resident Grandson (aka: "Paco") made this comment: "Grandma, you must be coming down with Altzheimer's; you must have forgotten how long forever is!". Paco further roiled the domestic waters by reaching across the kitchen table, grabbing the jar of peanut butter and moving it out of Grumpy's reach, all in full view of the Grand Mother.

All this, as Grumpy was unselfishly sharing a huge piece of LMP #1 with him! Alas, where is respect for their elders gone with this younger generation. Or for their Uncles, in fact!

The Wool Slippers; aka: "MocaSocks"

It seems fitting (pardon the pun) that the story of the Wool Slippers (go to URL: http://rentonkayaker.blogspot.com/2008/02/wool-slippers.html) should be told from the perspective of the donee and wearer, namely me, Grumpy.

The photo shows how the Wool Slippers (hereinafter, "MocaSocks" -- so named because they combine all the features of socks with those of a moccasin) fit on Grumpy's feet. Notice, in the background, that the screensaver on Grumpy's "Big Daddy" machine also features the now-infamous MocaSocks! Also note that white (cotton) socks are worn inside the MocaSocks -- that should answer the question posed by one of the commenters on the Renton Kayaker's BLOG about the possibility of forestalling wool allergy by wearing cotton socks inside the great, warm & cozy MocaSocks.

These are highly prized and Grumpy can't thank Bopop enough for having taken the time and effort to make them for me.
