On Wednesday this past week, the Grand Mother, friend Margaret and Grumpy drove North to visit the tulip and daffodil fields on the Skagit River delta. We knew ahead of time that the tulips are staying on schedule for blooming on April Fool's day; but there were those among us who delight in seeing the daffodils in all their glory, and such glory will be diminished if not entirely gone by the beginning of April.
Sure enough, our 150 mile round trip was richly rewarded by the sight of these two fields of gold (King Alfred's). Besides, this day (March 17th) is a "special day" in the memories of the First Wife and Grumpy: this was the day, 63 years ago, tht Grumpy finally got up enough nerve to ask the beautiful young blond girl, who had allegedly stumbled on to his lap during a game of musical chairs at a fudge party, to be his wife. And she accepted!!
A stop at the Roozengaarde display garden gave us a chance to see some other varieties of daffodils, and these very aromatic Hyacinths.
In between the mid-morning preliminary tour past what Grumpy thought to be some of the better daffodil fields, and an early afternoon of what turned out to be the best daffodil fields, we all enjoyed a St. Patrick's Day lunch of corned-beef and cabbage at the very elegant "Farmhouse Restaurant" just off Highway 20 west of Mt. Vernon. [Note: Our friend was tempted by the very impressive-looking Lemon Meringue pies on display as we entered the restaurant; Grumpy strongly advised against this choice, having personally participated in a disappointing "taste test" of one of these pies with the One-Eyed Son at this very same restaurant a few years ago.]
For dessert, we had each prepared our palates for a piece of "Berry Barn" pie ala mode. Unfortunately, as we drove past the Berry Barn on our way to the Farmhouse, we noted that the Barn is closed until April 1st! Oh well, we must make another trip up there in two or three weeks to see the tulips and then we shall have dessert at the Berry Barn!!
